Finally the weather has cooled down enough to venture outdoors for a bit longer than a few minutes and poolside at Cabana, at the Address Dubai Mall, was the ideal place to begin my foray back into barbeque season. I roped in a friend of mine to join me for Churrasco Night and we got there at 7 pm just as things were beginning to heat up.. literally. The grills had been fired up shortly before we arrived and whilst they completed their last few minutes of cooking, we took in our laidback surroundings under frangipani trees, swaying in a gentle breeze. It was still early which meant we could ease ourselves into the Latin American inspired atmosphere and the very hospitable manager, Maryna had seated us at a table with a gorgeous view of the Burj Khalifa.
Churrasco, a Spanish term referring to grilled meat or barbeque, features quite prominently in South American cuisine. Waiters or passadores typically serve the cooked meat (ranging from chicken to seafood, beef and lamb), moving from table to table, with huge skewers, slicing or portioning onto the patrons’ individual plates. Prior to service beginning, you are given a disk, one side red and the other, green. If you’d like to continue being served, place the disk green side up. If you’ve had your fill, have the red side face up.
In keeping with the name, churrasco night focuses on the meat. While there are sufficient sides and salads to compliment the main courses, I didn’t feel that anything quite held its own with respect to the meat that was served. We had some freshly made rolls delivered to our table by Sufyaan (one of the best waiters I’ve ever met) and a portion of each of the three condiments, including our favourite of the night, Argentinian chimichurri. Service began with a juicy flank steak, medium for us and continued with lamb leg, beef tenderloin, chicken drumsticks, sausages, prawns and grilled pineapple. By the time the pineapple arrived, we were pretty much stuffed. As juicy as the chicken looked, it lacked flavour and we by far, preferred the red meat options to everything else.
Once we had recovered from the enormous selection of grills, we ventured back into the marquee to sample the desserts. I had my eye on the brigadeiro, sweetened condensed milk truffles and I could not resist a vanilla pudding cake which was excellent. Had I not overdone it on the mains, I would have most likely enjoyed a second helping.
Friendly and efficient service from the staff, a relaxed atmosphere and with overall good main courses, Churrasco Night is a great choice to get your weekend off to a flying start.
